Working with distinguished gender and politics scholar, Dr. Lois Harder, Margot's research examines the governance of intimate life in Canada. Her dissertation, Complicated Love: Parentage, Conjugality and Family Diversity in Canada, examines the governance of intimate life in Canada, focusing on the regulation of multi-parent and poly-conjugal families in provincial and federal legislation and case law.

Her master's and doctoral research is nationally recognized. She is the recipient of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Canada Graduate Master's Scholarship and the Vanier Canada Graduate Doctoral Scholarship.
